Holiday Portraits...

Our photographer friend Richard is doing holiday portraits!
We were lucky enough to snag a session with him recently, and the results are so great.  It's incredibly impressive to me that he was able to get ANY good shots, because things got CRAAAZZYYY during our session.  Seriously... a full-blown calamity.  Elliott cried, he ran away, he smiled with Teddy Grahams in his teeth, Evelyn pouted, and oh yeah... JAMES FELL IN THE CREEK.  Ughhhhhhh!!!  Poor Richard.  He took all this in stride, stayed totally cool, and managed to capture some really sweet moments in a very short amount of time.  If you are in the market for family photos this season (helloooo, cute Christmas cards), be sure to get in touch with Richard.  See his Holiday rates here.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, RICHARD!  WE LOVE OUR PHOTOS.  :)

Free People, and gum wall'ing, and stuff...

I had so much fun today with Anissa.  Remember her from the bikini shoot?
Ambiance is celebrating Fall fashion from Free People this month (really pretty).
I can't believe we're talking about the Fall transition fashion already... wasn't the first day of Summer like, yesterday???
But it all looks beautiful.  Lots of rich knits and embroidery, mustardy hues, and fun pattern play.
So we did photos.  Around 700 of em.  I love taking pictures in this big room flooded with light.
And did you know that there's a secret sliding glass door above the gum wall?  I totally spy on everyone from up there, and giggle at the endless exclamations of "EEEEWW, GROSS" coming from down below as they first encounter the wall.  This is promptly followed by a collective "Whoooa" as they take that first step into the alley.  They pop a piece of gum into their mouth, chew it just to the point of stickiness, and then ever so gingerly attempt to leave their mark-
without ever making contact with the wall itself.  They also like to remark about the smell.
It's usually something like... "It smells so nasty!  But in a good way."
Hilarious, I tell ya...  ANYWAY.  Yes, photos...  Fun.  Super good day.  :)
Isn't Anissa the cutest?  I love working with her.  And how great is that reclaimed wood wall?!
Ohmygosh.  I feel like I need one in my house.
Behind-the-scenes... (thanks, Grant)

QE2 x 60= ♥

Though her relevancy and politics can be argued endlessly...  I adore Queen Elizabeth.

I am SO excited about her Diamond Jubilee celebration.  I love the idea of celebrating her in this huge, grand way while she's alive and well, and able to partake in all of it.  Like Huckleberry Finn hearing his eulogy...  this is truly a celebration of life- a life not asked for, not campaigned for- and without respite.  I'm so thrilled that she's around to revel in the adoration.  Of course, I'm not alone.  It seems the entire world is using the jubilee as an excuse to smile, wave a flag, feel a bit nostalgic, a bit patriotic, and generally appreciate our older generation.  Whatever your opinion of the British Monarchy, it's hard to ignore the endurance of this small woman who has presided over a great country, through thick and thin- for 60 years.  I think she's remarkable and inspiring.  This article by Max Hasting's says it all much more eloquently than I'm equipped to convey.

In honor of this momentous occasion, I thought it would be great to share some of my favorite images of QE2 with you...

♥

I'm curious, do you guys have any interest in the jubilee?  What's your opinion of the Queen?

Beautiful babies...

Years ago, when James was very little, I bought the cheesiest how-to book for photographing babies.  Up until then, I had never (not EVER) photographed a baby (or children, for that matter), and it was a whole new world.  And (not gonna lie) a big challenge.  The classic "portrait" formula does you no good here.  Babies are squishy, floppy, wiggly, uncooperative, and their edges are so soft and round, that shadows and light seem oblivious to the subtle little curves.  The book had a few helpful insights, like:  "Get close", and "take full advantage of the month or two when they're able to sit, but not yet crawl".  I took an absurd amount of baby pictures.  I learned a lot.  Now with Elliott (and digital, and apps, and editing), I've learned even more!  A lot of it is common sense, but I've had several inquiries about the baby photos I post, so I thought I'd share a few tips with you here:

1. They're tiny - get DOWN.  I lay on the floor to photograph him all the time.  When he was even tinier, I would lay him on the bed, and crouch on the floor in front of him so that we were eye-to-eye.
2. Think you're close enough?  GET CLOSER!  Babies don't have that same sense of personal space that adults do.  In fact, they have an utter disregard for personal space.  I like to take advantage of this.  Some of my very favorite photos of Elliott have been from just inches away.
3. There is a purpose, a time and a place for flash photography, but if your goal is to capture a beautiful, bright, and natural portrait of your baby, the FLASH is your enemy.  This was one of the very first instructions my photography teacher gave us in my very first photography class, and (in my opinion) it is the single most significant difference between a snapshot and a photograph.  For this picture of Jeffrey and Elliott, I walked into our room, noticed the sunlight dappled all over our bed from a big tree just outside the window, and hurried to  lay the baby down in the glow.  Jeff kneeled in front of him- trying to coax a smile for me, and I loved how their faces profiled together.
4. NATURAL LIGHT is a gift.  There is nothing more gorgeous than the light from a bright, open, window on luminous baby skin.  Use your curtains or shades to control how little or how much light you'd like.  Study the light in your bedroom, living room, or kitchen.  Do you prefer it in the morning, or as the sun is going down?  The photo above was lit with an open window to the right side.  Late morning.  Another of my first lessons in photography was to avoid backlighting, unless you were trying to capture your subject in silhouette.  But lately, I've been really intrigued by backlit photos, light flares, and light manipulation.  I feel more confident experimenting, and some of the results are so dramatic and fun.
5. DON'T SKIMP ON THE PHOTOS!  Ok, if you take away anything from this...  it should be to shoot, shoot, shoot.  I can't emphasize it enough.  Babies move constantly, you have to SHOOT CONSTANTLY.  Unless they're sleeping (and sometimes even then) you're guaranteed to get blurred, wiggly, shots.  So whether it's with a camera or a phone, I'll do 10, 20, 30 shots at a time.  It takes a fraction of a second to delete unwanted photos, and if it helps me to capture exactly what I was hoping for...  perfect alignment, a sun ray, a smile, a twinkle, a laugh, a kiss, a hug...  well, then it's priceless.

So that's it.  That's my little mini photo-tutorial for photographing mini people.  I'm not an expert, but I hope you'll find something useful in it.  ♥

magic shots...

I started taking photography pretty seriously in high school.  I remember the very first photo I developed and printed on my own.  It wasn't very good, but it was so satisfying to unravel my negatives and see the images, sharp and contrasting in the light.  In college, my bathroom/closet/study was also a slash-darkroom.  It was necessary!  Little else compares to that magical moment in the darkroom when the projector is raised and focused, you're adjusting... you're adjusting... and then *pow* you see that perfect crisp line.  You turn on the light, you say a little prayer.  You plunge the paper into chemicals...  developer, stop bath, fixer.  Even in the red light, you see that it's perfect.

It's tough to maintain that level of focus when children come into the picture...  I've forgone film for the ease and speed of digital.  There's still a magic moment, but it's no longer in the technicality of the process, it's in catching that wry little smirk at just the right nanosecond.  I live for that smirk.

I take so many shots of the babies, in pursuit of it- that it's sometimes easy to overlook the rest of the family.  My parents, in particular.  I've taken snapshots of them, sure... but I'm at an age now that I truly appreciate and admire them; I want portraits that reflect who they really are and what they mean to me.  I had a very happy realization recently that in the past year, I had captured separate images of both of my parents that embodied exactly who they were, and what they are in my eyes.  A magic shot.  Technically-speaking- no, these are not my best photographs, but what does that matter if they're my favorite...

The first one is my mother.  In the photo, she's holding Elliott when he's just ten days old.  She was out of state when he was born, and throughout my very difficult pregnancy, and the look on her face here says everything about the worry of the past 9 months evaporating. I often worry about my mom and the stress in her life; but in this photo I see all of that just melt away.  She's just completely serene, and it makes me so happy.

The next one is my dad.  To say he's a beach guy is a gross understatement.  He's a waterman.  He comes to visit every year for James' Birthday (New Years Day) and they do the Polar Bear Dip in Cayucos.  I captured this shot of him coming out of the water.  Freezing!  But look how happy he is.  My dad's smile turns into a laugh, and that turns into this great, loud, "haHA" sort-of backwards cackle.  I can actually hear it in my head when I look at this picture and it makes me giggle to myself.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to have these. I highly recommend capturing your own magic shot of a parent or loved one.  Take 25 shots of someone you love, heck, take 50, or 100! We all shoot digital now anyway, right?  Then go through each of them until you see that special thing that there's no word for.  That thing that captures the essence of them.  It need not be particularly posed, or technically correct, or even perfectly dignified- it just needs to make you smile.  :)
